Mid-Year Awards: Best Submission

imada-triangle-masvidalToby Imada’s Inverted Triangle on Jorge Masvidal at Bellator V on May 1

If this is not the best submission of the year I will be shocked.  Masvidal is no slouch, but Imada locked in an inverted triangle while hanging from Masvidal’s back.  It was tight and nearly put Masvidal to sleep.  This is a submission that will be talked about for a long time.  Not only was the submission incredible, but it earned Imada a place in the Bellator lightweight tournament against Eddie Alvarez.

Demian Maia’s Triangle on Chael Sonnen at UFC 95

I feel bad for Maia.  If this was not Maia it would be more impressive.  We have come to expect incredible submissions from Maia.  It was not just the triangle that impressed, but it was the throw prior to it mixed with the fact that Chael Sonnen is a top tier fighter.  Maia is perhaps the best submission ace in MMA right now.

Seth Dikun’s Flying Triangle on Rolando Perez at WEC 41

Won’t be seen often, but the flying triangle was impressive and was done in textbook fashion.

Joe Lauzon’s Armbar on Jeremy Stephens at UFC Fight Night 17 in February

Bloody and sweaty Lauzon finished the fight with a nice techinical armbar on Jeremy Stephens.
