It was pretty well known that Rich Franklin would be the headliner for UFC 103, but his opponent was not known. Today, UFC.com announced that Rich Franklin would get a re-match with Dan Henderson. It would appear that Franklin has indeed inked a new contract with the UFC and is prepared to return to the octagon.
Franklin and Henderson battled it out at UFC 93 in a bout that ended with Henderson winning by split decision. There were many who felt Franklin earned the victory. A re-match will settle the score. No official word has come as to the weight of the fight, but it is likely that the bout will be a light heavyweight bout.
Dan Henderson went on to coach season 9 of the Ultimate Fighter opposite Michael Bisping. While Henderson’s Team USA did not fare well, Henderson earned a highlight reel KO over the British middleweight fighter at UFC 100. The former PRIDE champion in two divisions is looking to go 2-0 in 2009 against Franklin.
Franklin followed his loss to Henderson with an impressive split decision win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99 in Germany. Franklin, the former UFC middelweight champion is hoping for a big win that will vault him to the top of the light heavyweight division.
The UFC also confirmed a heavyweight bout between strikers Mirko Cro Cop and Junior Dos Santos at the same event.
UFC 103 is set to take place on September 19th in Dallas, Texas. Also to featured on the card is a number one contender match in the welterweight division between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann. As well as the UFC return of Frank Trigg who faces Josh Koscheck.
