It is being reported that Affliction will cancel their August 1st event. The event was put into danger when Josh Barnett failed a pre-fight drug screen acording to the California State Athletic Comission. Barnett was not granted a liscense to fight top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko at the event.
Affliction’s VP Tom Atencio initally stated that a replacement was going to be found for Barnett and the show would not be cancelled. Several names came up as potential replacements. Many people suggested Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum, Paul Buentello, Mohammed Lawal and Jeff Monson. The name that was most discussed was middleweight Vitor Belfort who was slated to fight Jorge Santiago at the event.
It is unknown what Affliction’s cancellation means for the promotion, but it cannot be good. Regardless, several fighters are now without a job and a pay check that they expected in a week. This may be the final nail in Affliction’s coffin.
