MMAFighting.com is reporting that former PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi has signed with the UFC. It is still unknown when the Japanese star will debut, but he is a huge addition to the UFC. Gomi holds a career loss in 2003 to champ B.J. Penn, but a re-match would be highly anticipated.
Gomi had been widely considered a top lightweight in the world at the time of PRIDE’s collapse, however Gomi has struggled since going 4-2. Gomi lost a controversial decision to Sergey Golyaev and then followed that by losing to Satoru Kitaoka. In his career he holds notable wins over Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Rumina Sato, Jens Pulver, Luiz Azeredo, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hayato Sakurai, Marcus Aurelio, Mitsuhiro Ishida, Duane Ludwig, and Takeshi Nakakura. Gomi will be billed as an instant contender. Fans will look forward to hear of a debut opponent and date.
