It was announced last night that welterweight contender Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann has been forced off of the UFC 111 card and his bout with Ben Saunders due to a cut he received above his right eye. Kampmann should be able to heal up and be ready to go by the summer. It is a rather unfourtanate injury for Kampmann who was looking to build off of his UFC 108 victory over Jacob Volkmann.
Replacing Kampmann is Jake Ellenberger. Ellenberger debuted in the UFC against Carlos Condit and lost a very close split decision to to the former WEC champion. Ellenberger followed that with a big victory over veteran Mike Pyle. Ellenberger has shown very well rounded martial arts skills and will be a threat to any opponent.
Ellenberger will be facing Ben Saunders. When Saunders appeared on the Ultimate Fighter 6 I did not expect him to fair as well as he has. It could be argued that he has been the most successful of the cast. Saunders lost a fight to Mike Swick last year, but rebounded with a big win over Marcus Davis in which he became the firts man to knockout Davis. Saunders’ size and dangerous knees make him a serious threat at 170 pounds.
Should be a good bout. It is likely that this bout will remain of the night’s main card.
UFC 11 is set for March 27th in New Jersey and will air on pay per view. For updated fight crad information check the “upcoming events” tab.
