A lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and contender Gray Maynard is set to go down at UFC 125 according to various sources. UFC 125 is expected to take place on January 1st in Las Vegas.
Edgar won the title by defeated B.J. Penn at UFC 112 in Abu Dahbi in a controversial decision. At UFC 118 Edgar cleared up any controversy by handling Penn a second time. Edgar showed vast improvement as he moved in and out against Penn and scored several take downs on the former champion. The New Jersey native has a 14-1 career record with his only loss coming to Gray Maynard. While many people have felt that Edgar is undersized as a lightweight he has solid wrestling credentials mixed with improving boxing technique. Edgar will look to avenge his only career loss.
Gray Maynard is well deserving of his title shot. Maynard is 8-0-1 in the UFC and 10-0 overall. Maynard has improved greatly since coming off of the fifth season of the Ultimate Fighter. “The Bully” was known primarily for his wrestling ability, but has shown an improved all around game. Maynard’s resume speaks for itself. He boasts wins over Kenny Florian, Frank Edgar, Jim Miller, Nate Diaz and Roger Huerta. The former Michigan State wrestling all-American has shown he can win fights, but critics have questioned his ability to finish. It is very likely that Maynard will enter UFC 125 as the odds on favorite to capture the title from Edgar.
Many have questioned whether the Maynard vs. Edgar fight will be a fan draw so UFC 125 has also been rumored to host the middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort as well as a light heavyweight showdown between Brandon Vera and Thiago Silva.
