The State of the UFC Lightweight Division

The UFC’s lightweight division is by far the largest division. It also the division with the biggest logjam at the top. Make no mistake about it, the division is full of potential, but the lack of clarity at top makes it confusing.

The Champion: Frank Edgar
The Number One Contender: Gray Maynard
In the Mix: Jim Miller, Melvin Guillard, Clay Guida and Dennis Siver
It would appear that Jim Miller will get the next title shot if he were to beat Ben Henderson.  However, Melvin Guillard is making a loud push towards a title shot as well.  It is unclear what the UFC will do with these guys who are “in the mix”.  Eliminators seem likely.

The Other Guys: Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Matt Wiman, Joe Lauzon, Ben Henderson, Anthony Pettis
On the Rise: Charles Oliveira, John Makdessi, Edson Barboza
Don’t Forget About These Guys: Donald Cerrone, Gleison Tibau, Rafael Dos Anjos, Sam Stout, Jeremy Stephens, Mac Danzig, Nik Lentz, Ross Pearson, Nate Diaz, George Sotiropolous and Takanori Gomi

Notes:

  • Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard are both coming of injuries that forced them out of a UFC 130 title fight.  However, both fighters have recently been cleared to train.  It it highly possible that fight could be re-scheduled for October 8 at UFC 136
