An Outlook on the UFC Middleweight Division

The UFC’s middleweight division has long been dominated by champion Anderson Silva.  While he has made the division look weak there is no shortage of fighters lined up to challenge the champion

On the heels of an impressive victory over Brian Stann and a series of challenges it appears Chael Sonnen will get the next crack at Anderson Silva.  Sonnen posed the most difficult challenge to Silva and this seems to be the fight fans want to see.  However, it appears that Silva’s managment is not crazy about the Sonnen fight.  Most people still assume Sonnen and Silva could fight Super Bowl weekened.

There are a few more title challenger elimination fights on the docket.  Mark Munoz could move close to a title shot with a win over Chris Leben.  Michael Bisping could make a case for a title shot with a win over “Mayhem” Miller.  On the outside looking in is Alan Belcher and Vitor Belfort.  There are other guys who could climb the ladder.  We could see Chris Weidman make a move towards the title in 2012.  We could see Dan Henderson drop down and get the title shot re-match.  We could see Rousimar Palhares make some noise.  We could see Brian Stann get back in the discussion.  We could also see Luke Rockhold, Jacare Souza, and Tim Kennedy in the UFC title mix.

All of this makes for a very confusing situation.  The outcome will be determined by who get the next shot at Silva.  My guess would be it is Sonnen.  Then I think we could see any combination of Bisping or Munoz get the subsequent title shot or they could fight for the number one contender spot.

The dust will settle soon.
